Getting started

Try a project workflow

Practice with an internal project, an action item, and a dated milestone.

Create a “Website practice” project to try the Work Board and Timeline with sample work. Use a workspace where you can create and edit projects. Leave the client blank so the example stays within your team.

Create the practice project

  1. Open Projects and select New Project.
  2. Enter “Website practice” in Project name. Leave Client blank.
  3. If Start from appears, leave it at Blank project.
  4. Select Quick create. The new project opens in Studio.

For the full setup flow, see Create a project.

Add work and a checkpoint

  1. Open the project’s Work tab.
  2. Open New and choose Action item.
  3. Enter “Prepare homepage outline” in Subject. Set Deadline to tomorrow.
  4. Select Create Action Item. The action item appears in the project’s work.
  5. Open New and choose Milestone. The new milestone’s details open.
  6. Select the New milestone title. Replace it with “Homepage outline ready” and press Enter.
  7. Select Date and choose a date one week from today. Close the milestone details after the change saves.

The project now has an action item for the work and a milestone for the checkpoint. See Action items for assignees and milestone links.

Move the action item on the Board

  1. In Work, choose the Board layout.
  2. Change the grouping to Status. Find “Prepare homepage outline” in Pending.
  3. Drag the action item into In Progress.
  4. Wait for the save to succeed. The action item stays in In Progress, while “Homepage outline ready” stays in Pending.

For keyboard controls and status restrictions, see Move work across the project board.

Find the checkpoint on the Timeline

  1. Choose the Timeline layout.
  2. Find “Homepage outline ready” on the date you chose.
  3. Select Open editor. Find both sample names in the work rows beside the chart.

A deadline alone does not give an action item a scheduled work span. Use Milestones and My Week when you are ready to plan the dates.

Keep the project for more practice, or archive the practice project when you finish. You can restore it later.
